Members and their guests are invited to attend the opening of Construction Sites.
The 1980s and ‘90s saw a pronounced interest in the politics of identity—grounded in the categories and intersections of race, gender, and sexuality—that focussed on the body as the primary site of contention. Lost, or perhaps relegated to the background in the excitement and very necessary intensity of that movement, was the question of place and how these bodies inhabit the lands and various sites of existence. The Sight, Reconstructed forum examines how 'space' can be reconsidered by tracking the critical elements of the marginalized body, pushing beyond the hubris of identity without losing the essential politics learned through postcolonial, gender, and queer theory.
Ashok Mathur moderates the forum presentations and discussion. This event is produced in association with The Centre for innovation in Culture and the Arts in Canada (CiCAC) and the Community-University Research Alliance (CURA) at Thompson Rivers University.
Join Annette Hurtig and Craig Willms for a guided tour of the Construction Sites exhibition. The treatment of identity and place in works by artists such as Diyan Achjadi, Rebecca Belmore, Allyson Clay, Andy Fabo, Jim Logan, Ken Lum, Al McWilliams, Nan Duc Nguyen, Sharon Yuen, Jin-me Yoon and Tania Willard will be analyzed and discussed.
