Orca Door, Grade Three Class, 2011
This year the students at Parkcrest Elementary in Kamloops decided to rejuvenate their school with a series of painted murals decorating selected doors throughout the school. Individual classes discussed appropriate themes and ideas with the Artist in Residence, Joey Nash, and Parkcrest's Metis Education Worker, Christina Boyer. These unique painting classes taught students to communicate inspiring messages by exploring local and West Coast geography, the seasons, cycles of the sun and moon various wildlife and the symbols they embody. Each mural builds on the last, combining bright panels ofcolour, bold lines and traditional First Nations’ techniques and styles. This project was funded through ArtStarts in Schools, First Nations Education Council of Kamloops, and Parkcrest Parent Advisory Council.
