We learn the compressed air machinery has done its work and shut down, the remainder of the tunnel to be finished by hand work. Probably by to-day the heading is through the 1600 feet, and it will now require some weeks to clear out and prepare for track laying. It is thought by that time the portions in hand between Yale and Suspension Bridge will be completed and the track work continued.
We have so often referred to the work during progress, while up and down the line, that we now purpose delaying further remarks until we visit the Big Tunnel again and judge for ourself. However, we may here that the Compressed Air system enabled the Railway Company to make good headway with the work. it is not our purpose now to inquire where the responsibility rests for the lives lost during the past year.
Work beyond the Big Tunnel is well advanced and, we learn, a large force is employed at present and doing as well as could be expected.
P.S.We learn that the heading was put through yesterday noon, when a barrel of beer was tapped. Mr. Onderdonk and officials of the road were present.
