According to Omer Lavallée, this ballast train is working on the CPR contract to the east of Savona. The locomotive is a 2-6-0 Mogul-type locomotive purchased from the Virginia & Truckee Railroad in February of 1883. According to research done by the Nevada State Railroad Museum, this was the V & T locomotive #5, the Carson, built by Baldwin in 1869, with a cylinder size of 16 x 24 - 48 in., and a weight of 55,000 lbs. In 1887 the locomotive was sold to the Intercolonial Railway in Nova Scotia, and numbered 190. It was converted to an 0-6-0 type in 1908, and re-numbered 1025. The locomotive became the property of the Canadian Government Railway, and eventually the Canadian National Railway, when it was renumbered 7083. In its last years it was used as a Canadian National yard locomotive in Amherst, Nova Scotia, and was scrapped in 1926. [Cf. Lavallée, Van Horne's Road, 219]
