The S.S. Spallumcheen was launched in 1878 and had been built for the Kamloops Steam Navigation Company. Her engines came from the old S.S. Kamloops, dismantled that year. A side-wheeler, she drew about 6 inches of water. It was intended that she ply the Spallumcheen river between Shuswap Lake and Fortune's Landing.
