While much of the grading work had commenced by January of 1881, when Onderdonk's Assistant Superintendent, John L. Bray, had set up his headquarters at Spence's Bridge, the grading continued throughout 1882. Construction was greatly facilitated after the completion of the cantilever bridge in the summer of 1884. By July 31, 1884, track had been laid to Nicomin Creek and to Spence's bridge by September.
ontract No. 62 began at Lytton and continued along the Thompson to Junction Flat, a distance of 28½ miles. The date of completion was set at December 31, 1884. The scheduled price was $2,056,950.
