The first excursion by train was held on July 4, 1881, for the benefit of the Yale Fire Organization, and consisted of a trip from Yale to Emory, and back again. The event was described in detail in The Inland Sentinel, July 7, 1881. The photograph is probably by R. Maynard of Victoria who was present on the occasion. The Church of St. John the Divine can be seen in the background.
