S.S. Western Slope

The S.S. Western Slope at Yale
BCA Call No. A-00153
BCA Catalogue No. HP000322

The Western Slope was one of the sternwheelers that brought goods to Yale when the railway was being constructed. The trip up the river took twice as long as the return trip with the current. An item in The Inland Sentinel quotes a report from Victoria's Daily Colonist as follows:

The steamer Western Slope arrived from Yale at 4 o'clock yesterday afternoon — only 12 hours from Yale. She made all the landings, took on hay at Chilliwhack [sic] and other freight at Sumas, stopped some time at New Westminster and averaged 14 miles per hour from the head of navigation to this port. About 40 passengers and the B.C. Express came down. On the up-trip the Slope was only 25½ hours from Victoria. She sails again for Yale at one o'clock today.

The Western Slope had been launched in 1879.
